I begged my parents to get a dog for seventeen years. Finally, they caved in – after I went off to my freshman year of college (sigh, what more can you expect from parents?). Since then, I have loved every minute of the two years I have spent with my yellow lab, Teddy, and have relished my time with him while away at school. Here are five reasons why I have realized the saying that dogs are (wo)man’s best friend is really true!
1. They love you unconditionally.
Dogs are extremely loyal beings and love to run in packs with others. Once you welcome a dog into your home, he or she welcomes you into their pack and treats you like family. They would do anything for you from protecting your safety, consoling you when you are sad, and affectionately play with you and give you their undivided attention. Everyone has times when they feel lonely or down on their luck, and a dog can cheer up your mood extremely quickly, especially from my experiences.
2. They encourage you to enjoy the outdoors.
One of the most important parts of taking care of a dog is making sure he or she gets exercise! This can be a blessing in disguise. Even though its not always our favorite thing to have to take the dog for a walk or go out and play in the yard when its boiling hot or frigid and snowing, dogs always find a way to pry us from our virtual worlds and out into nature. Going on walks with Teddy gives me a chance to reflect on my week and the events in my daily life in peace and quiet. Also, I come back with a fresh outlook on life and a burst of energy from moving around and getting the blood flowing after sitting at a desk for most of the day.
3. Dogs attract new friends!
I don’t know about you, but whenever I am out and about walking my dog, I always end up running into neighbors and others who live in my town. They are always extremely friendly and excited to see a dog and Teddy is so friendly that he is an immediate conversation starter. And who hasn’t witnessed the jaw-dropping sight that is a cute guy with an adorable dog! That just screams commitment right there!
4. They don’t judge you.
Everyone has felt judged in some way during their lives. Dogs don’t see any of the superficial flaws between people that humans do. In fact, dogs don’t judge you on anything unless you cause them trauma in some grave way. No matter who you are or what you do, your dog will be right there behind you supporting you all the way. (They also don’t object to costumes – if that’s your thing.)
5. Dogs are FANTASTIC comedians!
Come on, who HASN’T seen the billions of “funny dog videos” and vines roaming around the internet?! Without fail, your dog is bound to do something funny during their life. I know that when my family and I say “Who’s here?” in a certain vocal tone, Teddy takes off running to the side door, stands up like a meerkat and barks for about 5 minutes at nothing. Or, of course, if your dog resembles Teddy’s sense of humor, they could ham it up by sitting underneath the dishwasher door while we load it with plates in order to obtain a piece of the micro-scraps left on our plates after a meal.
